As of recent, if you have an AMEX business card, whether gold or platinum, you can use your points to get a rebate on any purchase you've made on your AMEX at the equivalent of a 1% ratio.  Definitely not the best use of AMEX points, but it's a flexibility that isn't even offered on the US version of the AMEX business card.
On the personal AMEX card, it's also a option, but at a disappointing ratio of 0.7% instead of 1% on the business.
This is a better option than a gift card--the only advantage to the gift card is that it be used precisely for that--a gift for someone.  Spending 10K points on a business purchase of your choice to save $100 is better than spending 13K AMEX points for a $100 gift card.
